Cosmetic veneers, step by step

Step 1

The first stage in the cosmetic veneer process is ensuring that your gums are in good condition. There is no point in giving you perfect teeth if your gums aren’t healthy. We’ll make sure that your gums are clean and that you are following a good home care routine.

During your first appointment your teeth will be prepared to have the veneers placed on them. This involves removing a tiny amount of the tooth surface the thickness of a fingernail. This creates space for the new porcelain veneer. The colour of the surrounding teeth is matched on a shade guide to make sure that the veneer will look entirely natural. We’ll then take an impression of your teeth and send it to the technicians at DTS who will create your veneers.

After this procedure, the surface of your teeth may feel slightly rough but they will appear completely normal. They will also be more sensitive to the air and to cold. It is extremely important to keep them well-brushed at this point because they will be more likely to stain. Temporary veneers can be fitted but this is obviously more expensive and is not usually necessary.

Step 2

Once the veneers have been made we’ll fix up an appointment with you to test them out. The appearance and the size of the veneer is checked to make sure it meets your needs. If the veneers are unsuitable for any reason – aesthetically or functionally – the lab technicians can make adjustments.

It is very important that you are satisfied with your veneers. Tell us if there is anything you would like to change at this stage because it will be costly to make changes later. Remember that major modifications cannot be made once veneers are bonded to your teeth.

Step 3

When you are happy with your veneers we will book you in for the bonding application. Bonding sounds like it should be straightforward but it often involves a number of elaborate steps. Once the veneers are attached they will be durable and provide you with a beautiful, even smile. We will give you advice on how to look after your veneers so that they last as long as possible.
